MIDI: Unveiling the Language of Electronic Music
MIDI, short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, isn’t sound. It’s crucial to understand this fundamental concept from the outset. Instead, MIDI is a communication protocol, a language, that allows electronic musical instruments, computers, and other related devices to talk to each other. It’s a series of coded messages that convey musical information, such as which notes to play, how loudly, for how long, and with what timbre or articulation. Dave Smith of Sequential Circuits, along with representatives from Roland, Yamaha, and other key players, recognized this bottleneck and embarked on a mission to create a universal standard. Over the years, MIDI has evolved. General MIDI (GM) emerged as a subset of the standard, aiming to provide a consistent set of 128 instrument sounds across different synthesizers and sound modules. This ensured that a MIDI file created on one GM-compatible device would sound roughly the same on another, regardless of the manufacturer. While GM offered a degree of predictability, it also constrained sonic possibilities.
Further enhancements included MIDI Time Code (MTC) for synchronizing music with video and other time-based media, and MIDI Machine Control (MMC) for controlling tape recorders and other recording devices. More recently, MIDI 2.0 has been introduced, offering significantly increased resolution, bidirectional communication, and more nuanced control over instruments. While adoption of MIDI 2.0 is still ongoing, it promises to further expand the possibilities of electronic music creation.
